Sprint strength reset: are you actually getting stronger?

By Rex | Exercise Scientist

There is a big difference between working hard and getting stronger.

A workout can leave you sweating, sore and exhausted without producing much meaningful improvement in strength.

This is particularly common when people train without a clear progression.

They perform the same exercises.

Use the same weights.

Complete the same repetitions.

Then wonder why their body stops changing.

Strength training works because the body adapts to progressively increasing demands.

That doesn’t mean every session needs to be harder than the last.

It means your program needs a clear reason for progression.

Over time, that might mean:

  • lifting more weight
  • completing more repetitions
  • improving technique
  • increasing range of motion
  • controlling movements more effectively
  • or progressing to a more challenging exercise

The important part is that the training stimulus changes as your capacity improves.

This becomes particularly important when preparing for spring sport or increasing general activity.

Strength provides the physical foundation that allows your body to tolerate running, jumping, changing direction, lifting and repeated activity.

But strength doesn’t happen overnight.

It is built through consistent exposure to the right stimulus.

This is why structured strength training is different from simply going to the gym.

A program should consider where you are starting, what you are trying to achieve and how you will progress.

It should also account for recovery.

If you’re constantly exhausted, progression becomes difficult.

If you’re never challenged, adaptation becomes limited.

The sweet spot is training that is challenging enough to create change but structured enough to recover from.

As spring approaches, don’t just ask yourself whether you’re exercising.

Ask:

“Am I actually becoming stronger?”

If the answer is no, your program may need a reset.
